Cars run hot – that’s just a fact of life. Any engine that runs for long enough and hard enough is going to generate some heat. Luckily your car has an inbuilt cooling system that’s designed to prevent your engine from overheating. Let’s take a look at some signs that your cooling system might be sick and in need of a bit of tender loving care.

We’re also going to be looking at a few signs that your car’s air conditioning system might be in trouble because staying cool behind the wheel is just as important as keeping your engine cool!

Cooling System Failure

Your car’s cooling system is particularly vulnerable during the summer months. It’s best to take some time to learn about this because cooling system issues are a leading cause of breakdowns.

Look Out for These Signs

There are several signs that something may be wrong with your cooling system and the most noticeable one is your engine overheating. Every dashboard has a gauge that shows the relative heat of your engine and this gauge should stay on the cool side, or in between cool and hot. Anything tending towards hot is a cause for concern.

Another symptom is being able to smell antifreeze. This may indicate a leak or problem in the distribution of the fluid throughout your engine.

Also, if you find yourself constantly topping up your coolant it may mean that it is not being distributed properly, or is leaking.

Other signs and symptoms of cooling system issues are obvious leaks, steam coming from under your bonnet and hissing and spitting sounds. Also, a hot engine gives off a very unique and distinct smell.

Things You Can Do

You should be checking your coolant level on a regular basis. Please always remember to NEVER open a hot radiator cap. It is very dangerous. If your coolant levels are low add a 50/50 water to antifreeze mix until it’s topped up. You can also buy premixed coolant, which can be poured straight in.

You can also do a visual check of your engine. Inspect the belts, radiator and hoses. Look for leaks, corrosion and frayed and cracked belts.

Signs of a Faulty Air Con

Let’s take a look at some signs that your car’s air conditioning system may be in need of repair.

Blowing Hot

If you have your air conditioner set on cold and it’s blowing out hot air, or room-temperature air, then you may have a problem.

Unusual Noises

If your air con is making strange and weird sounds then there may be a problem with the air compressor.

Strange Smells
Strange smells emitting from your vents may also indicate a problem with your temperature control system.

If in doubt, take your car to a local mechanic in Canning Vale or your nearest suburb. Your problem may be something as simple as being in need of a re-gas, or you could have a leak. Either way, let an experienced automotive mechanic take a look and see!
